What Is Egg Allergy?

Egg allergy is one of the most common food allergies in children. The allergy is primarily directed at proteins in egg white, although egg yolk allergy can also occur. Most children with egg allergy outgrow it by adolescence, but a proportion carry it into adulthood.

Component testing can distinguish between sensitisation to ovomucoid (a heat-stable protein that persists in cooked egg) and ovalbumin (a heat-labile protein destroyed by cooking). This distinction may be relevant when discussing baked-egg tolerance with your allergist.

Results are provided directly to you to share with your GP or allergist for clinical interpretation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my child eat baked egg if they have egg allergy?

Some children with egg allergy can tolerate baked egg (e.g., in cakes) because cooking denatures heat-labile proteins like ovalbumin. Ovomucoid-specific IgE testing can help your allergist assess this possibility. Any dietary changes should be supervised by your specialist.

Does egg allergy affect vaccination?

Some vaccines are cultured in eggs. Current UK guidelines state that most people with egg allergy can safely receive routine vaccines, but discuss your allergy status with your GP or practice nurse before vaccination.

Do I need a GP referral for allergy testing?

No. You can book directly with our clinic without a GP referral. Simply choose your test and select a convenient appointment time. If you're unsure which test is right for your symptoms, our team can help guide your selection.

Do I need to stop taking antihistamines before a blood test?

No. Unlike skin prick testing, IgE blood tests are not affected by antihistamines or other allergy medications. You can continue taking your regular medications before your appointment.

What should I do with my results?

As a diagnostic-only clinic, we provide results directly to you. We recommend sharing them with your GP or allergist for clinical interpretation and dietary guidance.
