What Is Latex Allergy?

Latex allergy is an IgE-mediated immune response to proteins found in natural rubber latex, derived from the sap of the Hevea brasiliensis tree. It is most common among healthcare workers, people who have undergone multiple surgeries, and those with occupational latex exposure.

An important associated condition is latex-fruit syndrome, where individuals sensitised to latex may also react to certain fruits including banana, avocado, kiwi, and chestnut. This cross-reactivity is mediated by shared proteins such as chitinases and profilins.

Component testing can help distinguish true latex allergy (Hev b 5, Hev b 6) from cross-reactive sensitisation (Hev b 8 profilin). Results should be shared with your GP or allergist for clinical interpretation. If you have experienced severe reactions to latex, always inform healthcare providers before medical procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is latex-fruit syndrome?

Latex-fruit syndrome describes cross-reactivity between natural rubber latex and certain fruits and vegetables. Individuals with latex allergy may experience oral or systemic symptoms when eating banana, avocado, kiwi, chestnut, tomato, or papaya due to shared proteins.

Are synthetic latex products safe?

Synthetic latex (such as nitrile or vinyl) does not contain Hevea brasiliensis proteins and is generally safe for individuals with natural rubber latex allergy. However, it is important to confirm the material type, as some products labelled "latex-free" may still contain natural rubber.

Do I need a GP referral for allergy testing?

No. You can book directly with our clinic without a GP referral. Simply choose your test and select a convenient appointment time. If you're unsure which test is right for your symptoms, our team can help guide your selection.

Do I need to stop taking antihistamines before a blood test?

No. Unlike skin prick testing, IgE blood tests are not affected by antihistamines or other allergy medications. You can continue taking your regular medications before your appointment.

What should I do with my results?

As a diagnostic-only clinic, we provide results directly to you. We recommend sharing them with your GP or allergist for interpretation. If confirmed, ensure your allergy is documented in your medical records for surgical and dental procedures.
