What Is a Mould Allergy?

A mould allergy is an immune response triggered when a sensitised person inhales airborne mould spores. The immune system may produce IgE antibodies against specific mould proteins, leading to respiratory, nasal, and ocular symptoms. Mould allergies can occur year-round, particularly in damp indoor environments.

Common mould species associated with allergies in the UK include Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Penicillium, and Alternaria. These moulds can be found in bathrooms, kitchens, poorly ventilated buildings, and outdoor environments, particularly during autumn.

Our blood tests measure specific IgE antibodies to mould allergens. Results are provided directly to you to share with your GP or specialist for interpretation and guidance on environmental management.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you be allergic to mould?

Yes, mould allergy is a recognised allergic condition. The immune system may produce IgE antibodies against mould spore proteins, leading to symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, and eye irritation upon exposure.

Is mould allergy worse in certain seasons?

Outdoor mould spore counts tend to peak in autumn when decaying vegetation is most abundant. However, indoor mould can cause year-round symptoms, particularly in damp or poorly ventilated properties.

Which mould species are tested?

Our allergy profiles and the ALEX² test include common allergenic moulds such as Aspergillus fumigatus, Cladosporium herbarum, Alternaria alternata, and Penicillium chrysogenum.

Do I need a GP referral for allergy testing?

No. You can book directly with our clinic without a GP referral. Simply choose your test and select a convenient appointment time. If you're unsure which test is right for your symptoms, our team can help guide your selection.

Do I need to stop taking antihistamines before a blood test?

No. Unlike skin prick testing, IgE blood tests are not affected by antihistamines or other allergy medications. You can continue taking your regular medications before your appointment.

What should I do with my results?

As a diagnostic-only clinic, we provide results directly to you. We recommend sharing them with your GP or an appropriate healthcare professional for interpretation and guidance on environmental management.
