What Is Sesame Allergy?

Sesame allergy is an IgE-mediated food allergy to proteins in sesame seeds. It is one of the 14 allergens that must be declared on food labels in the UK under food information regulations. Sesame allergy prevalence is increasing and reactions can be severe.

Sesame is found in tahini, hummus, bread, crackers, sushi, and many Middle Eastern, Asian, and increasingly Western foods. Cross-reactivity with other seeds and peanut has been documented through shared seed storage proteins (2S albumins).

If you have a known sesame allergy with a history of severe reactions, always follow your existing emergency action plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is sesame oil safe if I have sesame allergy?

Refined sesame oil may contain lower levels of allergenic protein, but cold-pressed or unrefined sesame oil retains significant amounts of sesame protein. Your allergist can advise on individual risk based on your test results and clinical history.

Can sesame allergy cross-react with other seeds?

Yes. Cross-reactivity through shared 2S albumin seed storage proteins has been documented between sesame and poppy seed, kiwi, and tree nuts. Component testing can help clarify cross-reactive patterns.

Do I need a GP referral for allergy testing?

No. You can book directly with our clinic without a GP referral. Simply choose your test and select a convenient appointment time. If you're unsure which test is right for your symptoms, our team can help guide your selection.

Do I need to stop taking antihistamines before a blood test?

No. Unlike skin prick testing, IgE blood tests are not affected by antihistamines or other allergy medications. You can continue taking your regular medications before your appointment.

What should I do with my results?

As a diagnostic-only clinic, we provide results directly to you. We recommend sharing them with your GP or allergist for interpretation and dietary guidance.
