What Is Tree Nut Allergy?

Tree nut allergy is an IgE-mediated food allergy to one or more tree nuts, including walnut, cashew, hazelnut, almond, pistachio, pecan, Brazil nut, and macadamia. It is distinct from peanut allergy (peanuts are legumes), although some individuals are allergic to both.

Reactions can vary from mild oral symptoms to severe anaphylaxis. Component-resolved testing can help distinguish between primary nut allergy (mediated by seed storage proteins such as 2S albumins and vicilins) and cross-reactive sensitisation from birch pollen (PR-10 proteins), which typically causes milder symptoms.

If you have a known tree nut allergy with a history of severe reactions, always follow your existing emergency action plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

If I am allergic to one tree nut, am I allergic to all?

Not necessarily. Some people are allergic to only one tree nut, while others react to several. Component testing can help clarify which nuts you may be sensitised to and whether sensitisation is due to primary allergy or cross-reactivity.

Is coconut a tree nut?

Coconut is classified as a tree nut by the FDA but is botanically a fruit. True allergic cross-reactivity between coconut and other tree nuts is uncommon, though it can occur. Individual testing can clarify your specific sensitivities.

Do I need a GP referral for allergy testing?

No. You can book directly with our clinic without a GP referral. Simply choose your test and select a convenient appointment time. If you're unsure which test is right for your symptoms, our team can help guide your selection.

Do I need to stop taking antihistamines before a blood test?

No. Unlike skin prick testing, IgE blood tests are not affected by antihistamines or other allergy medications. You can continue taking your regular medications before your appointment.

What should I do with my results?

As a diagnostic-only clinic, we provide results directly to you. We recommend sharing them with your GP or allergist for interpretation and dietary management advice.
