What Is Allergic Asthma?

Allergic asthma is the most common form of asthma, in which airway inflammation and bronchospasm are triggered by exposure to specific allergens. When a sensitised individual inhales an allergen, the immune system may produce IgE antibodies that activate mast cells in the airways, leading to inflammation, mucus production, and narrowing of the bronchial tubes.

Common allergic triggers for asthma include dust mites, pet dander, pollen, and mould spores. Identifying your specific triggers through allergy testing can be an informative step.

Our blood tests measure specific IgE antibodies to allergens commonly associated with asthma. Results are provided directly to you to share with your GP or respiratory specialist for interpretation and to inform asthma management.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can allergy testing help manage my asthma?

Identifying specific allergic triggers can be an informative step. Knowing which allergens you are sensitised to may help you and your healthcare professional develop more targeted environmental control strategies alongside your existing asthma management plan.

What is the Eosinophil Cationic Protein test?

ECP is a marker of eosinophil activation, which can be elevated in allergic inflammation including allergic asthma. It may provide additional context alongside IgE results when shared with your specialist.

Do I need a GP referral for allergy testing?

No. You can book directly with our clinic without a GP referral. Simply choose your test and select a convenient appointment time. If you're unsure which test is right for your symptoms, our team can help guide your selection.

Do I need to stop taking antihistamines before a blood test?

No. Unlike skin prick testing, IgE blood tests are not affected by antihistamines or other allergy medications. You can continue taking your regular medications before your appointment.

What should I do with my results?

As a diagnostic-only clinic, we provide results directly to you. We recommend sharing them with your GP or respiratory specialist for interpretation and to inform your asthma management plan.
